Location & Transportation
When you arrive in Tabuaeran, your ship will be tendered ashore. Three high-speed, 200-passenger tenders ferry guests from the cruise ship to what we call English Harbor. The journey itself is a lovely introduction to the island’s clear turquoise waters and gentle sea breezes. Once you step off the tender, a laid-back island vibe welcomes you.
Sightseeing
Ashore, you'll find a beautiful blend of natural and cultural attractions. I love beginning with a slow stroll along one of the island’s pristine beaches—Fanning Island is famous for one of the world's most picture-perfect sandy stretches, often referred to by visitors as Napali Beach. Spend your morning swimming in warm, shallow lagoon waters or simply lounging with a good book under the sun.
Don’t miss a guided tour offered by the local islanders. On these tours, you can visit the village cluster to see traditional homes, explore seaweed farms, and pop by small supply stores while hearing stories of island history and life from an I-Kiribati perspective. The open–air straw market is a treat, too. It’s the perfect spot to pick up unique souvenirs like shell jewelry, hand-carved shark tooth knives, postcards, collectors' stamps, and even dream catchers. And if you time it right, you might catch a community barbeque feast complete with energetic dance performances in traditional grass skirts—an absolute window into local heritage.
Tours & Excursions
If you’re eager to venture further, renting a bicycle is an excellent option. Pedal through charming outer villages, greet curious locals (especially the mischievous young ones), and marvel at the island’s natural beauty. Along the scenic routes, keep an eye out for giant land crabs and enjoy postcard-perfect views of both the island and the surrounding sea. For water lovers, snorkeling and scuba diving trips along the vibrant outer reef reveal an underwater world of colorful corals, tropical fish, sea turtles, and even graceful manta rays.
Shopping
For those who love picking up local crafts, the island’s open-air straw market is a must-visit. Here you can find handcrafted treasures such as:
- Shell jewelry and ornaments
- Hand-carved shark tooth knives
- Unique postcards and collectors' stamps
- Dream catchers and other indigenous crafts
These markets not only offer wonderful mementos but are also a great chance to interact with friendly local vendors.
Dining
Dining on Tabuaeran is a relaxed, communal experience. Many local eateries serve up fresh seafood, grilled over open fires, and tropical fruits that taste like sunshine. I recommend sampling:
- Freshly grilled fish and locally caught seafood dishes
- Traditional barbeque feasts that often accompany cultural shows
- Refreshing cocktails made with coconut water and local rum
Enjoy your meal outdoors where the gentle island breeze and warm hospitality perfectly compliment the flavors.
Culture & Local Events
The island's culture is as vibrant as its natural beauty. Here are a few insights and tips to help you soak it all in:
- Local people speak English and Gilbertese. While English is common among those who work with tourists, trying a few words in Gilbertese is always appreciated.
- The Australian Dollar (AUD) is used here. Although prices might sometimes be shared in other currencies for convenience, it’s wise to have some local cash on hand for smaller vendors.
- Daily life on the island runs on “island time,” so shops and markets may have varying hours. Check locally for any specific event timings.
- Local community events sometimes include dance performances, traditional music, and feast days where the whole village comes together to celebrate. These events offer you a firsthand look at the island’s rich cultural traditions.
- For safety, remember that if you ever need urgent assistance, the emergency number is 999.
Immerse yourself in the welcoming local spirit, and don't hesitate to ask community members about any special events or festivals happening during your visit.
