Location & Transportation
San Diego Cruise Port is located at 1140 North Harbor Drive on the B Street Pier in downtown San Diego. I love that this port is right in the heart of the city—it means you can easily set out on foot to explore the local attractions or hop in a taxi for a quick ride.
If you’re arriving by air, San Diego International Airport is only about a 10-minute taxi ride away. The airport has a dedicated taxi pick-up area right outside the baggage claim sections, which makes the transition from air travel to your cruise seamless.
Plus, if you're sailing with select cruise lines, there’s a handy baggage service that will pick up your checked items at the airport and deliver them directly to your ship—what a nice way to travel light while you take in all the local sights!
Sightseeing
San Diego is full of exciting places to explore. While strolling around, you can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and nature. Some highlights include:
- USS Midway Museum: Walk on board an actual aircraft carrier and explore fascinating exhibits.
- The Gaslamp Quarter: Dive into the energetic mix of dining, shopping, and history in this lively district.
- San Diego Zoo: World-renowned for its incredible variety of animals and beautifully maintained grounds.
- Balboa Park: A vast cultural complex home to museums, gardens, and stunning Spanish-style architecture.
- San Diego Wild Animal Park: Enjoy a safari-like experience among exotic wildlife.
- Local Beaches: Soak up the sun and surf at nearby spots like Coronado Beach.
I’ve always found that a casual walk through these areas gives you a true taste of San Diego’s relaxed yet vibrant vibe.
Tours & Excursions
San Diego’s compact downtown makes it easy to explore by foot—and if you’re in the mood for a little adventure, there are plenty of excursions to choose from:
- Coronado Ferry: Take a scenic ride from the Broadway Pier to Coronado Island for a refreshing view of San Diego Bay.
- Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tours: These buses let you explore the city at your own pace, with stops at all the major attractions.
- Guided Walking Tours: Join a tour of the downtown area or the Gaslamp Quarter to uncover hidden gems and learn local history.
- Metropolitan Transit System: Use the San Diego MTS for buses, trolleys, or trains to easily navigate different neighborhoods.
It‘s a good idea to compare shore excursion costs between what your cruise line offers and options like Viator and GetYourGuide. They often provide lower prices and include customer reviews and ratings to help you choose the best option. They may also offer more more flexible cancellation or rescheduling policies than those available through your cruise line. However, while booking independently might give you more variety and potentially better rates, be mindful of your schedule - cruise line excursions are typically coordinated to match your ship‘s schedule with guaranteed pick-up and drop-off times.
There is also a great resource for finding local guides at Tours by Locals. Tours by Locals connects you with local guides who can help you plan a private personal tour, guide you, and get you back to your ship on time. You can also check out Rome2Rio for local transportation options. It is a great resource for finding how to get from one place to another, including public transportation, taxis, ferries, and more.
Shopping
San Diego offers a fantastic array of shopping experiences, from unique boutiques to charming waterfront markets. Some of my favorites include:
- Seaport Village: Wander through quaint shops selling local crafts and souvenirs along the harbor.
- Gaslamp Quarter Boutiques: Browse trendy clothing stores, art galleries, and specialty shops nestled in a historic setting.
These spots offer great finds whether you’re looking for a keepsake or a stylish update.
Dining
The culinary scene in San Diego is as vibrant and diverse as the city itself. Whether you're in the mood for fresh seafood, authentic Mexican flavors, or a classic American burger, there’s something here for every palate:
- Try the famous fish tacos at local seafood joints.
- Enjoy international flavors in intimate bistros around the Gaslamp Quarter.
- Relax at casual beachside cafes where you can dine with a view.
Every meal is a chance to experience a bit of San Diego’s sunny spirit and coastal charm.
Culture & Local Events
San Diego blends casual American culture with a warm, coastal vibe. Here are a few cultural tips and local event insights that might come in handy during your visit:
- Currency & Payments: Dollars are used here, and major credit cards are widely accepted. It’s always a good idea to have a little cash on hand for small purchases.
- Tipping: Tipping is customary in the U.S. Generally, 15–20% is expected at full-service restaurants, and small tips are appreciated for taxis and other personal services.
- Hours: Most shops and restaurants typically open around 10 a.m. and close by 9 p.m., though hours can vary on weekends and holidays—so a quick check ahead of your visit is wise.
Local Events
San Diego is never short of events and festivals. Depending on when you visit, you might catch:
- Comic-Con International (typically in July) – a must-see for pop culture fans.
- San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival – a delectable celebration for foodies.
- Various local cultural fairs, outdoor concerts, and community events that bring the city to life.
