Location & Transportation
When you step off your ship, you’ll find yourself at Holland Amerika Quay in the city center with the North Sea right at your side. I love the short walk over the iconic Erasmus Bridge—it instantly makes you feel connected to Rotterdam’s modern vibe.
Here's what I suggest:
- The train station is just a 5-minute cab ride away or a pleasant 25-minute stroll if you’re up for it.
- Look for Tram 23 or 25 (about 500 meters from the quay); get off at Wilhelminaplein.
- For a quick trip to Rotterdam The Hague Airport, hop on bus 33 from there.
- Taxis are readily available at around €10 plus a small extra if you have lots of luggage. Just note that most drivers cross the Erasmus Bridge and may take a slightly longer route to add a little extra charge.
Nearby Lodging
Rotterdam has a variety of comfortable hotels in the city center. Whether you’re looking for a modern boutique stay like citizenM or a more traditional option, there’s something to suit every taste. Many accommodations are within walking distance of major attractions and the train station.
Nearest Airport
The Rotterdam The Hague Airport is easily reached by bus or taxi, making it very convenient if you plan to explore further afield. Additionally, if you’re arriving from abroad, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is about an hour by train.
Sightseeing
Rotterdam is a city that has reinvented itself. After World War II, it rose from the ashes to become a modern metropolis full of striking architecture and lively culture. My must-see spots include:
- The 605-ft (184-m) tall Euromast Space Tower with its revolving elevator offering amazing views of the city and harbor.
- The famous Erasmus Bridge, affectionately known as “the swan.”
- The bustling harbor—one of the busiest in the world.
- The Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, showcasing art ranging from Dutch classics to modern masterpieces.
- A stroll through the rebuilt central areas, where modern design meets historical hints of the past.
Tours & Excursions
Rotterdam is wonderfully walkable, but there are plenty of ways to explore if you’re short on time or prefer a guided tour:
- Take the Hop on/off Tram (Line 10) which gives you a charming ride past key highlights like the cube houses, the new Central Station, and the old Delfshaven district.
- Jump on one of the harbor trips offered by Spido for an up-close view of the city’s busy docks.
- Don’t miss a visit to nearby gems like the UNESCO-listed Kinderdijk for a look at traditional working windmills, or a quick trip to the historic town of Dordrecht for a taste of true Dutch charm. You can catch the Waterbus from near the Erasmus Bridge to reach these spots.
Shopping
Shopping in Rotterdam is a breeze. The major shopping area around the Lijnbaan, close to the dock and train station, offers a mix of high street stores and unique boutiques. You’ll find modern shopping centers as well as local markets where you can pick up souvenirs and gifts.
Dining
I was thrilled to discover the Markthal in Rotterdam, a vibrant market hall that opened in 2014. It’s bursting with fresh fish, warm bread, quality cheeses, and colorful vegetables. Whether you’re in the mood for a quick bite or a hearty Dutch meal, Rotterdam’s diverse dining scene caters to every palate.
Culture & Local Events
Rotterdam is rich in local culture and events. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Currency & Payments: The Netherlands uses the Euro (EUR). While credit cards are accepted in many places, some small shops might prefer cash or only accept local debit cards. It’s a good idea to have some coins handy since small denominations are frequently used.
- Communication: Almost everyone speaks English here. Besides Dutch, many locals speak German and even a bit of French, but English works perfectly if you’re visiting.
- Opening Hours:
- Most shops open from Tuesday to Saturday, typically between 9:00 and 18:00.
- In the city center, many stores open on Sunday from noon to around 17:00.
- Late-night shopping is available on Friday evenings until about 21:00.
- Please note that individual hours may vary, especially around public holidays.
- Local Events: Rotterdam hosts a range of fantastic festivals and events throughout the year—from modern art and architecture tours to lively music festivals like the North Sea Jazz Festival and the International Film Festival. There’s always something happening in the city that reflects its innovative spirit and maritime heritage.
Safety & Awareness
While Rotterdam is generally safe, always be mindful of your belongings in crowded tourist areas. In case of any emergency, dial 112 and you’ll be assisted promptly. I found the locals to be friendly and helpful, so don’t hesitate to ask for directions if you need them.
