Location & Transportation
I love starting my day in Progreso at the impressive Progreso Pier—a pier that stretches five miles straight into the Gulf of Mexico and is touted as the longest in the world. It’s a unique experience, and once you disembark, there’s a free shuttle running right from the ships into town, making it easy to get started without any hassle.
• On foot, you’ll find a beautiful stretch of beach that has several decent restaurants to enjoy a meal with a view.
• Taxis are readily available at the pier and in town, though many visitors find that exploring on foot is the best way to soak up the relaxed atmosphere.
Nearby Lodging
While many cruisers visit Progreso just for a day, there are a few modest hotels and guesthouses close to the pier and along the beachfront if you decide to spend more time. For a more immersive cultural experience, you might even consider a short stay in nearby Merida.
Nearest Airport
If you’re flying in, Merida International Airport (MAN, also known as Manuel Crescencio Rejón International Airport) is your best choice. It’s roughly a 30-minute to 1-hour taxi ride from Progreso, and there are local bus services available too.
Sightseeing
Progreso has transformed from a sleepy fishing village into a vibrant cruise port without losing its charming local spirit. It’s a great base for exploring the Yucatan Peninsula:
• Visit the town of Progreso to enjoy its laid-back atmosphere and beautiful beaches.
• Check out Chicxulub and learn about the famous crater linked to the extinction of the dinosaurs—this unique piece of history is a must-see.
Tours & Excursions
There are plenty of ways to discover the local gems in and around Progreso:
• Hop on the local “Sightseeing Tour” bus for just $2. It leaves near the crafts market and runs every 10 minutes, giving you a quick overview of Progreso’s beaches, markets, plazas, and eateries.
• Taxis in the area typically charge around $18 per hour, which is a convenient option if you’d prefer a more personalized tour.
• If you have extra time, consider a day trip to nearby Merida—a lively city with history dating back to the 1500s, filled with colonial architecture and the oldest cathedral in the Americas. Local buses are very affordable, or a taxi ride will get you there in style.
• Don’t miss the chance to visit Chichen-Itza, home to the Kukulkan Pyramid, one of the new seven wonders of the world, located about 120 km from Merida.
Shopping
When it comes to shopping, Progreso offers a few charming options right at the cruise terminal. There are souvenir shops stocked with local crafts and necessities, and if you wander a bit further, you'll find a lively crafts market. Just keep an eye on your belongings, as pickpockets can sometimes be found in busy tourist areas.
Dining
Dining in Progreso is a treat, especially if you love fresh seafood. I’ve enjoyed walking along the beach and stopping at one of the local restaurants for a delicious meal—think freshly grilled fish, ceviche, and traditional Mexican fare. The relaxed atmosphere makes it a perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely lunch or dinner with a view of the Gulf.
Culture & Local Events
Progreso offers a warm welcome with its friendly locals and relaxed pace. Here are a few tips and insights to help you feel right at home:
• Currency & Payment: The local currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN). While many tourist spots accept US dollars, prices are usually best in pesos. I’ve noticed that exchange rates are roughly 17 MXN to 1 USD.
• Language: Spanish is the main language in Progreso, but you’ll hear plenty of English, especially in the tourist areas.
• Business Hours: In larger towns like nearby Merida, most shops and attractions open around 10:00–11:00 AM and close between 8:00–10:00 PM. In smaller local spots, you might find earlier closing times.
• Local Events: Progreso and the surrounding Yucatan region come alive during local festivals such as Carnival and various seafood celebrations. These events offer an authentic taste of local culture with music, dance, and vibrant street life.
• Safety & Awareness: While Progreso is generally safe, it’s wise to watch your belongings in crowded areas, especially near the market.
