Location & Transportation
I love how the dock sits in the middle of town right at the base of the impressive Fortezze Medicee. As you disembark, to your left you’ll find the central business district and the ferry docks, while on the right the marina welcomes you with yachts, upscale shops, restaurants, and cafés. Portoferraio is incredibly walkable, so you can easily explore on foot. Taxis are plentiful if you need a quick ride. For a glimpse of local life, check out this overview picture of Portoferraio.

Sightseeing
Portoferraio is a treasure trove of history and natural beauty. I was especially moved learning that Napoleon was once exiled here—both his summer and winter residences are open for tours. Strolling through the town, you can:
- Wander the historic streets and admire the centuries-old architecture.
- Enjoy leisurely hikes or bike rides around the town’s plaza, especially magical after sunset.
- Discover small hilltop towns, ancient castles, and quaint churches tucked away in the interior.
- Experience the lush floral displays that enhance the region’s natural charm.
Tours & Excursions
If you’re in Portoferraio between the end of May and the end of August, hop on the local tourist train for a fun and affordable guided tour (only 5 euros!). Buses run year-round and connect the major towns of Elba. From June through September, the Marebus service even links the beaches of Portoferraio, Marciana, Rio nell'Elba, and Capoliveri. I also recommend picking up a Bus Elbacard if you plan to explore further—a one-day ticket costs 10 euros and gives you the freedom to travel anywhere on the island’s urban and suburban lines.
Shopping
Right after you leave your ship, you’ll notice a blend of upscale boutiques and souvenir shops, especially as you head toward the marina. It’s a great place to pick up a unique memento of your time on Elba.
Dining
Portoferraio offers an inviting mix of dining options—from cozy cafés to elegant restaurants where you can savor authentic Italian cuisine. Enjoy fresh seafood, homemade pasta, and local specialties paired with an excellent Italian wine selection. Whether you’re grabbing a quick espresso or sitting down for a leisurely meal, the town’s culinary scene reflects its rich coastal traditions.
Culture & Local Events
I found that Portoferraio is not only about beautiful sights but also about vibrant local culture. Here are some tips and insights to enhance your visit:
- Local businesses generally open Monday to Saturday, typically from around 8 AM until 1 PM and then from about 4 PM to 7 PM. Keep in mind that many shops may close on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings.
- In Italy, cash is king in smaller establishments, though credit cards are widely accepted at most locations. Tipping isn’t compulsory, but leaving a small amount (around 5–10%) for good service is always appreciated.
- While exploring, check out local event calendars—there are often festivals celebrating history, food, and the arts that add to the island’s charm.
Feel free to ask locals about current events or seasonal markets for a truly authentic experience.
Safety & Awareness
As in any lovely tourist destination, just be mindful of your belongings especially in crowded areas. A relaxed pace and a bit of common sense go a long way to ensuring a safe and pleasant visit.
