Location & Transportation
When your ship docks at Pointe des Galets, you'll find that getting around is an adventure itself. The port is a short drive—about 30 minutes—from downtown St. Denis, the vibrant heart of Réunion. Here are some tips from my own experience navigating the area:
- Free Port Bus: A compulsory free bus takes you right outside the port gates.
- Taxis: There are a few taxis waiting just outside, but be sure to agree on the fare before starting your journey. A ride to St. Denis can cost around €45, and some drivers charge up to €100 per hour. Many taxis might not carry change or accept credit cards, so plan ahead.
- Local Buses: Bus #2 stops right across from the terminal and will take you into central St. Denis for about €20. It’s a scenic, coastal ride that can be a bit crowded with longer waits between services. If you're headed to Le Port, another bus is available for just €5.
- Shuttles: Occasionally, shuttles might drop you off at popular spots like the local market or the main bus station.
Nearest Airport
For those planning further travels, the nearest airport is Reunion Roland Garros Airport (RUN). Located roughly 20 km northeast of Pointe des Galets, it offers regular flights to France and other international destinations. It’s a convenient gateway if you need to extend your stay on this beautiful island.
Sightseeing
Réunion Island is a treasure trove of natural wonders and cultural delights. I’ve found that exploring here feels like stepping into a world where rugged landscapes meet a vibrant urban scene. Highlights include:
- The island’s active volcano on the south coast
- Nearly 17 miles of warm, inviting beaches in the west
- Lush mountain ranges, dense forests, and the unique “cirques” (deep, natural canyons) formed by ancient volcanic activity
- The busy town of Le Port, with its modern architecture, long avenues lined with royal palms, and a lively pedestrian shopping area
For a closer look at local art and history, consider visiting:
- Musée Léon Dierx (St. Denis): A wonderful spot showcasing modern art and local cultural exhibits.
Tours & Excursions
There’s plenty to do if you’re looking for an active day of exploration:
- Le Barachois Promenade: Enjoy a waterfront walk with stunning views of the Indian Ocean and historic cannons.
- Nature Adventures: Join a hiking tour to explore one of Réunion’s famous cirques, such as those in Mafate, Salazie, or Cilaos. Whether it’s canyoning near a waterfall or a scenic coastal walk, these excursions are perfect for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike.
- Cultural Outings in St. Denis: A short bus ride can take you to St. Denis, where markets, historic sites, and local street art await.
Shopping
You’ll find a delightful mix of local crafts in and around Pointe des Galets:
- Local Handicrafts: Embroideries, spices, vanilla, and rum feature prominently in the local market scene.
- Souvenir Shops: The port terminal offers a few shops for quick souvenirs, though the best shopping experiences are usually found in St. Denis.
- Market Hours: Note that many shops take a long lunch break from around noon to 4:00 PM.
Dining
Dining on Réunion Island is an unforgettable experience; the cuisine here is a delicious blend of French, Indian, African, and Chinese influences. Some personal favorites include:
- Creole Specialties: Try dishes like rougail, cari (a spicy stew), or fresh seafood prepared with local spices.
- Street Food & Local Cafés: Small eateries and market stalls serve up authentic flavors that are both hearty and delicious.
- Restaurants in St. Denis: For a more formal meal, a short trip to St. Denis offers several restaurants where you can enjoy both traditional and contemporary dishes.
Culture & Local Events
Réunion’s culture is a rich tapestry influenced by its diverse heritage. While the local currency is the Euro, many vendors in traditional markets operate on a cash-only basis, so it’s wise to have some cash handy. Here are a few insights that might help during your visit:
- Local Festivals: The island hosts vibrant festivals throughout the year. Depending on when you visit, you might catch celebrations like:
- Dipavali: A colorful festival celebrated by the Tamil community.
- Cavadee: Marked by traditional rituals and processions.
- Fête de la Musique: When local musicians fill the streets with lively performances.
- Daily Life: Many shops observe a long lunch break (typically noon to 4:00 PM), so plan your shopping or sightseeing accordingly.
- Language & Communication: French and Réunionnaise Creole are widely spoken. You’ll notice the local flavor in the food, music, and art, which all contribute to the island’s unique ambiance.

As with any travel destination, a few common-sense tips go a long way:
- Keep an eye on your belongings, especially when using crowded public transport.
- When taking taxis, agree on the fare before you start your ride.
- If you’re planning outdoor activities like hiking or canyoning, check the weather conditions and follow local guidelines for safety.
