Ocean Cay is a private island exclusively used by MSC Cruises, offering a unique and intimate slice of Bahamian paradise. It sits in the Bimini chain in the western Bahamas, about 20 miles south of Bimini and only 65 miles east of Miami, which makes it an easy stop on itineraries out of PortMiami and Port Canaveral. When your ship docks, you’ll step into a setting of pristine white-sand beaches and clear blue waters. Ships tie up right alongside the pier, so you simply walk straight off the ship and onto the island — no tenders, and you can pop back aboard anytime during the day. Getting around is a breeze: there are easy-to-follow walking paths to every corner of the island, plus complimentary golf-cart transport if you’d rather not walk. It’s a relaxed environment: no rush, just peace and a chance to immerse yourself in the tropical vibe.
Sightseeing
Even though Ocean Cay is a small, private island — just 95 acres, with more than two miles of beachfront — there’s plenty to see and enjoy:
- Pristine Beaches: With eight distinct stretches of sand, you can stroll the shores, take a dip, or simply relax under the sun. I love that each beach has its own character, from lively Lighthouse Bay to the quieter, tucked-away Paradise Sands near the spa.
- The Lighthouse Light Show: Ships usually stay late into the evening, and I’d stick around for the nightly light-and-music show at the island’s iconic 100-foot lighthouse — it’s the highlight of a day here.
- Marine Life: Look out for colorful fish and coral formations if you decide to snorkel along designated spots.
- Eco-Trails: Once an abandoned industrial sand-mining site, Ocean Cay has been restored into a working marine reserve surrounded by protected waters, and marked trails with informative plaques let you learn about the local wildlife and conservation efforts as you explore.
