Location & Transportation
Since March 2003, the Hercules Port has been transforming Monte Carlo’s waterfront. Cruise ships now dock directly, letting you step off and into the charm of Monaco without having to linger at anchor. I love that from the pier, I’m only a short walk to the Old Town (Monaco-Ville) – although be ready to tackle some hills! There are plenty of elevators and escalators if you need a break, but a map is essential in this compact, steep city.
Taxis are readily available near the pier if walking isn’t your thing. Do note, on busy days when the dock is full, tenders may be used. And if the weather is too rough, your ship might instead set sail to Villefranche, so keep an eye on your cruise calendar.
Nearby Lodging
Monte Carlo is famous for its upscale accommodations. You can choose from luxurious hotels such as the Hotel Hermitage or Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, which offer superb service and are close to the casino and other landmarks.
Nearest Airport
The nearest airport is Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, about a 30-minute drive from Monte Carlo. Taxis are available right outside the port, with fares typically ranging from €40 to €50. Alternatively, you can take a train or bus for a scenic route along the coast.
Sightseeing
Monte Carlo is all about glamour and history in a compact, walkable area. I always make sure to visit these must-see sites:
- Casino de Monte Carlo
Experience the glitz and elegance at this world-famous casino. It opens at 12:00 p.m. for European gaming and later offers slot machines and private gaming rooms. Remember, the entrance fee is around €10 and you’ll need a passport if you wish to play – and don your best formal attire! - Jardin Exotique (Exotic Gardens)
Nestled high on a steep cliff, these extraordinary gardens are packed with flowering plants, palm trees, and cacti. You can take the local bus (No.2) from the pier to reach this enchanting retreat. It’s a bit of a climb back up, making it a great mini-adventure. - Museum National des Automates & Poupees Autrefois
This quirky museum gives you a glimpse into artful dolls and mechanical figures from the 18th and 19th centuries—a delightful step back in time. - Oceanographic Museum
Located in Old Monaco, this museum is renowned for its impressive marine life displays—a project inspired by the legendary Jacques Cousteau. - Palais Princier (Prince's Palace)
Set in Monaco-Ville, the palace offers daily guided tours and the famous changing of the guard ceremony at 11:55 a.m. The surrounding views of the harbor and city are simply breathtaking.

Just a short bus ride away is the medieval village of Eze. Perched on a rocky peak, Eze offers cobbled streets, historic charm, and panoramic views of the Mediterranean. It’s a must for anyone intrigued by old-world beauty. -
Train Rides
The Monaco-Monte Carlo railway station connects you to the Côte d’Azur, with frequent trains to Nice that offer stunning coastal views.
Shopping
Monte Carlo is synonymous with luxury. Stroll around Place du Casino, rue des Moulins, and Galerie Metropole to discover designer boutiques, elegant clothing, and dazzling jewelry. Keep in mind that some shops take a break for lunch between 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., so plan your shopping spree accordingly.
Dining
The dining scene here reflects Monaco’s upscale vibe and Mediterranean flavors. Some of my favorites include:
- Fine Dining
Indulge in gourmet meals at world-renowned restaurants like Le Louis XV - Alain Ducasse at the Hotel de Paris, where exquisite French cuisine is on full display. - Casual Bistros & Cafés
For something more laid-back, explore local bistros offering fresh seafood, vibrant Mediterranean flavors, and delightful pastries. - Outdoor Dining
Enjoy al fresco meals with views of the harbor. A leisurely lunch at a seaside café is a great way to soak up the atmosphere of Monte Carlo.
Culture & Local Events
Monte Carlo effortlessly blends old-world charm with a sparkling modern lifestyle. Here are a few cultural insights and events I always recommend:
Local Events
- Monaco Grand Prix
This iconic Formula 1 race lights up Monte Carlo every year (usually in May). The excitement in the air is contagious! - Monte Carlo Rally
For motorsport enthusiasts, the rally is a thrilling display of precision driving along picturesque roads. - International Circus Festival
An annual celebration showcasing top-notch circus performances and arts from around the globe. - Art Exhibitions & Shows
The principality frequently hosts world-class art shows and cultural events, so it’s worth checking the local listings during your visit.
Additionally, a few local tips:
- The local currency is the euro. While credit cards are accepted in most upscale establishments, carrying a bit of cash is always handy.
- Communication is easy here—French is the official language, but Italian, English, and Monegasque are also spoken.
- Most shops, attractions, and restaurants open around 10:00 a.m. and close between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. Note that schedules can change during major events and holidays.
Safety & Awareness
Monte Carlo is one of the safest destinations in Europe. However, always stay mindful of your surroundings, especially in crowded places like casinos and popular tourist sites. Keeping an eye on your personal belongings is always a good practice.
