Location & Transportation
You will be docked about 900 meters from the center of town. I found it very convenient to start your adventure on foot—Måløy’s compact town center is easy to explore. Local taxis are available if you prefer a ride, and the laid-back pace of the town makes walking quite enjoyable.
Sightseeing
Måløy is a charming coastal town in Sogn og Fjordane county, perched on the island of Vågsøy at the start of the Nordfjord. I love the blend of rugged and gentle scenery here. Some highlights include:
- Strolling along the waterfront promenade, known as "Strandgata," to enjoy the fresh sea breeze.
- Admiring the rocky coastline, sandy beaches, and nearby islands.
- If you’re up for an adventure, consider a boat trip to explore the fjords and islands at a closer range.

Tours & Excursions
There are a couple of fantastic day trips you shouldn’t miss:
- Explore Selje Monastery: Just a short distance from Måløy on the island of Selja, this historic site dates back to the 11th century. Walk among the peaceful ruins and soak in the legends linked to Saint Sunniva, the patron saint of Western Norway.
- Visit Kannesteinen Rock: A short drive away, this unique rock formation has been sculpted by the relentless ocean waves over centuries. It’s a perfect spot for a leisurely walk along the rugged coastline and for capturing extraordinary photographs.
Shopping
Måløy has a handful of local shops where you can pick up maritime crafts, local souvenirs, and specialty items. I enjoyed browsing for handcrafted goods that reflect the town’s rich seafaring tradition. Look out for small boutiques and artisan stands that offer unique pieces you might not find anywhere else.
Dining
Dining in Måløy is all about fresh seafood and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Here are a few things to try:
- Enjoy dishes featuring freshly caught fish, cod, or salmon.
- Taste a local specialty like brunost (Norwegian brown cheese) in a cozy café.
- Many small restaurants in town serve traditional Norwegian meals in a friendly setting that makes for a relaxed dining experience.
Culture & Local Events
Måløy exudes a friendly, small-town vibe with a rich maritime culture. Here’s some local insight I found helpful:
- Currency & Communication:
- Norway uses the Norwegian Krone (NOK). While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s wise to have some cash on hand for local vendors.
- English is commonly understood in tourist areas, though Norwegian is the primary language.
- Opening Hours & Holidays:
- Local shops and eateries typically open mid-morning and close come early evening. Many smaller businesses are closed on Sundays, so plan your shopping and dining accordingly.
- Local Events:
- Måløy occasionally hosts events that celebrate its maritime heritage. There may be seasonal festivals, like local seafood celebrations, that showcase traditional music, crafts, and cuisine. It’s a good idea to ask locals or check local listings upon arrival.
- Safety & Awareness:
- Norway is very safe for travelers. However, the weather along the coast can change quickly. I always kept an eye on the forecast and dressed in layers.
- For emergencies, dial 112.
