Location & Transportation
The ship is scheduled to dock at the Lyttelton Inner Harbor. Lyttelton’s town center is within walking distance, offering a taste of this historic port town. For security reasons, guests cannot leave the port area directly, so the local port authority runs a shuttle service between the passenger terminal and the i-SITE Information Centre at the heart of town.
A reminder of Lyttelton’s resilient past: the original port was devastated in the 2011 earthquake. Since then, a new $56 million cruise ship berth was completed in 2020, providing modern facilities for today’s travelers.
Local transportation options include:
- A free shuttle that drops you on the south side of Norwich Quay, from where you can catch local buses or explore the township on foot.
- Bus services departing from Norwich Quay (please note these require local NZ cash or day tickets, which Metro staff sell on-site).
Sightseeing
Lyttelton Harbor is a treasure for visitors:
- Enjoy sweeping views of the scenic harbor and the surrounding Port Hills.
- Learn about the rich Maori and European history as you take in the sights.
- Discover the three quaint islands in the harbor – Quail, Ripapa, and King Billy.
- Stroll along the waterfront where 19th-century churches and charming wooden houses cling to steep streets.
- Walk part of the historic Bridle Path trail used by the Canterbury pilgrims who arrived in Lyttelton in 1850, a nostalgic trek connecting Lyttelton and Christchurch.
Tours & Excursions
Local shuttles and tours make it easy to explore further:
- A cruise line–provided shuttle (generally no more than NZD 15) will take you from ship-side to Christchurch city. One popular stop is the Bridge of Remembrance on Cashel Street—expect a 25-minute ride.
- On landing at the south side of Norwich Quay, you can join a pre-booked local tour or simply wander into Lyttelton’s charming township.
- In Christchurch, you can explore highlights such as:
- The neo-Gothic Christ Church Cathedral
- The expansive Canterbury Museum
- The idyllic Botanic Gardens, earning Christchurch its nickname as the "Garden City".
- Bus services from Lyttelton to Christchurch (including direct trips that pass the Antarctic Centre) offer additional excursion options. Just remember, buses do not return you to the ship – you’ll need to catch the shuttle back from Norwich Quay.
Shopping
While shopping in Lyttelton itself is modest with a handful of local shops and cafés, a short trip into Christchurch offers a wider retail experience:
- Explore Cashel Street and the revitalized downtown area for a mix of modern shops and traditional stores.
- Visit the Arts Centre in Christchurch, where studios display local crafts such as pottery, bone carvings, pewter, sculptures, and unique jewelry.

- Christchurch is renowned for its diverse dining scene—from relaxed eateries offering fresh seafood to traditional pubs serving hearty New Zealand fare.
