Location & Transportation
I love the modern vibe of King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC), where the cruise port is set along the stunning Red Sea coast just north of the city. Navigating here is quite easy—taxis and local shuttle services help you get around, and the area is well signposted. Plus, for cruise passengers, Saudi Arabia now offers an eVisa option (approximately 130 Euros) to make your entry as smooth as possible.
Nearby Lodging
KAEC offers a range of accommodations from upscale resorts on the waterfront to comfortable hotels closer to the city center. Whether you’re after a luxury stay or something more modest, you’ll find a convenient option that lets you explore the city with ease.
Nearest Airport
The closest major airport is King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, which is about 100 kilometers from KAEC. From there, taxis or arranged transfers are available to bring you straight to the port.
Sightseeing
King Abdullah Economic City is a blend of forward-thinking design and cultural touches that make it truly unique. I enjoyed a relaxing walk along the expansive waterfront, which gives you a great taste of modern Saudi leisure. Highlights include:
- An invigorating stroll along the Beach Walk
- Spectacular views at the Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, famous for hosting international tournaments
- A glimpse of the upcoming motorsports park being developed in the Lagoona leisure area
Museums
One must-visit attraction is the Museum of Science and Technology. I was truly fascinated by its interactive exhibits that celebrate the achievements of legendary Muslim scientists and inventors such as Jabir ibn Hayyan, Abbas bin Firnas, al-Kindi, al-Razi, al-Jazari, and Taqi al-Din. The museum features impressive replicas like al-Jazari's Elephant Water Clock and Castle Clock, along with other ingenious mechanical systems that showcase innovations from the Islamic Golden Age.
Tours & Excursions
For a perfect day trip, you should definitely check out KAEC’s pristine beach destinations. Here are a couple of favorites:
- Yam Beach: Located in the Bay La Sun district, it features a natural pool surrounded by coral reefs. Whether you want to paddle-board, kayak, or simply relax on a sunbed, Yam Beach offers a refreshing coastal escape.
- Pure Beach: Known for its soft golden sands and excellent watersports, it’s a great spot for those who crave a bit of adventure or a leisurely day by the sea.
I’ve had some memorable afternoons soaking up the sun and enjoying the water sports—truly a must for cruise passengers seeking some outdoor fun.
Shopping
KAEC is home to modern shopping malls where you can find a mix of international brands and local boutiques. The malls are not only great for picking up unique souvenirs but also offer a comfortable escape from the heat. Typically, the shopping venues are open:
- Saturday to Tuesday: 10:00 AM to 12:00 AM
- Wednesday & Thursday: 10:00 AM to 2:00 AM
In addition to the malls, you might also stumble upon smaller traditional markets that give you a taste of local craftsmanship.
Dining
Dining in KAEC is a delightful blend of traditional Saudi flavors and international cuisine. While alcohol is strictly prohibited, the restaurants serve an array of delicious non-alcoholic beverages alongside their meals. Whether you’re enjoying fresh seafood or savoring a hearty plate of traditional Saudi dishes, you’ll find plenty of options to suit your taste. I really enjoyed the inviting ambiance and the care that goes into making sure every meal complements the local culture.
Culture & Local Events
Local Events
KAEC regularly plays host to cultural events and festivals that celebrate both modern innovation and traditional Saudi heritage. Although some of these events vary throughout the year, you might catch art exhibits, music festivals, or local markets that offer insights into the region's vibrant culture.
Safety & Awareness
When you visit KAEC, it’s important to keep a few local customs in mind:
- Dress modestly—both men and women should cover shoulders and knees in public. While head coverings are not required for everyday outings, they are still expected in places of worship.
- Public behavior adheres to strict norms: showing public displays of affection is frowned upon, and discretion is appreciated.
- Alcohol and drugs are completely banned under Sharia law.
- If you plan to take photographs or record videos, always ask for permission first.
- If you’re carrying medication, be sure to have a doctor’s prescription with you.
- Remember that the local currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR) and, although Arabic is the official language, English is widely understood.
- Shopping malls have specific hours of operation (Saturday to Tuesday: 10:00 AM to 12:00 AM; Wednesday & Thursday: 10:00 AM to 2:00 AM), so plan your visit accordingly.
Adhering to these guidelines will ensure you have a respectful and enjoyable experience during your visit.
