Location & Transportation
Jamestown is a tender port with a unique entrance. As you step off the ship, you’ll pass by old warehouses and former barracks. You enter through what was once a narrow, fortified gate, leading you up an inclined hill lined with charming, historic buildings. Because the town is built on steep terrain, be prepared for some walking—and enjoy every step as you take in the scenery.
Sightseeing
Saint Helena is one of the most isolated places in the world, over 1,200 miles (2,000 km) from the nearest major landmass. Here are some must-see highlights:
- Napoleon’s Legacy: The island is famous for being the place of exile for Napoleon. He lived on the island from 1815 until his death in 1821 at his farmhouse home, Longwood, near Jamestown.
- Jacob’s Ladder: This iconic flight of 669 steps connects Jamestown to the residential area at the top of the mountain. Named after the biblical ladder Jacob dreamed about, it was built by the Royal Engineers to provide quick access to a cannon battery. It’s not for the faint of heart, but the climb offers a unique perspective of the town and its surroundings.

Tours & Excursions
- Because of the hilly environment, I highly recommend joining a ship-organized tour or a guided excursion. This way, you can safely navigate the steep paths and learn about the rich history of the island directly from knowledgeable locals.
- Guided tours often include stops at key historical sites and scenic viewpoints that you might otherwise miss.
Shopping
While Jamestown is small, you’ll find local shops and markets offering unique souvenirs and handcrafted items that reflect the island’s heritage. This is the perfect place to pick up a memento of your visit—from local art to island specialties.
Dining
Jamestown offers a cozy selection of cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy local cuisine. Whether you’re sampling freshly caught seafood or other island delicacies, dining here is a relaxed affair with plenty of opportunities to chat with friendly locals.
Culture & Local Events
- Local Currency & Payments: Purchases are made in Saint Helena Pounds (SHP), which hold parity with the British pound sterling. In many places, British currency is used interchangeably, and some shops may also accept US Dollars and Euros.
- Language: English is the official language, making it easy for visitors to get around and interact with residents.
- Local Timing & Events: While specific opening hours may vary and local businesses might observe unique holiday schedules, it’s best to ask locally for the most up-to-date information. The island occasionally hosts festivals celebrating its history and culture, so keep an eye out for local events during your visit.
- Safety & Awareness: Jamestown is a friendly and safe port, but remember:
- Take it slow on steep paths like the climb up Jacob’s Ladder.
- Wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated.
- Be mindful of sudden weather changes, especially when exploring outdoor sites in the hilly terrain.
