Location & Transportation
When you arrive in Hvar, you won’t dock at a large terminal – you’ll be tendered right into the heart of town. I always love how quick and easy it is to get into the center, where lively streets and classic stone architecture await you. The town is very walkable, and if you need to travel around the island, local taxis are ready to whisk you away. For those who prefer an active approach, exploring on foot is the best way to soak in the charm of Hvar.
Sightseeing
Hvar is a delight for lovers of history, nature, and local culture. As you wander the pebbled streets, keep an eye out for:
- Hvar Town: Marvel at the seven-century-old defensive walls and ramparts that overlook the town. Don’t miss the elegant City Loggia and the exquisite St. Stephen's Cathedral boasting a Renaissance bell tower often hailed as one of Dalmatia’s finest.
- Architectural Gems: Notice the historic Arsenal and the Town’s Theatre dating back to 1612, as well as the charming details in every alley.
- Stari Grad Highlights: Just a short journey away, visit the famed Tvrdalj Castle – a fortified palace of the celebrated writer Petar Hektorovic, complete with a quaint fishpond and early Christian baptistry remnants. You can also see the remains of a villa rustica at “Pod Dolom” and the beautiful renaissance Church of St. Rok (1569).
- Vrboska: Wander through Vrboska’s narrow lanes to see Renaissance and Baroque buildings along with its fortified Church of St. Mary, and discover small bridges that add to its storybook charm.
Tours & Excursions
One of my favorite ways to experience Hvar is simply by exploring on foot:
- Take a long, scenic walk along the seaside promenade that stretches from one end of the harbor to the other. Enjoy small rocky beaches and quiet spots perfect for a break.
- Enjoy a relaxed coffee or cocktail at one of the tasteful bars and cafés lining the harbor – an ideal opportunity for people-watching and soaking up the local vibe.
- For a change of pace, hop on a ferry to the nearby Pakleni Islands. These islands offer secluded coves and pristine beaches, and are a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming.
Shopping
Hvar offers a taste of local tradition through its unique treats:
- Look out for the famous Hvar cakes, especially the pepper cakes from Stari Grad. Historically celebrated by local poets like Hektorović, these treats are rich with saffron, honey, and coriander – flavors that tell tales of the island’s past.
- As you stroll the streets, you might also discover other local delights such as "kroštule," "škanjate," "fritule," and "cvit" (a dry cake lightly flavoured with anise).
Dining
Hvar’s culinary scene is a lovely blend of Mediterranean flavors and local traditions. Whether you're in the mood for a light snack or a multi-course meal, you can:
- Sample freshly caught seafood paired with local wines at one of the harbor-side restaurants.
- Enjoy Dalmatian specialties in cozy taverns tucked away in narrow streets.
- Indulge in sweet treats like the local pepper cakes, which offer a unique taste of Hvar’s heritage.
Culture & Local Events
Hvar is not just about picturesque scenery—it’s about the vibrant local culture and the relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle. Here, I’ve found that:
- Local Life: Shops and local businesses often keep extended hours during the tourist season, and while banks and post offices may run on a more traditional schedule (generally open from 7 AM to 7 PM, with some extending later during summer), the town always buzzes with energy.
- Festivals & Events: Hvar comes alive during the summer with lively festivals, outdoor concerts, and art exhibits that celebrate its historic past and modern-day flair. There’s always something happening—from cultural events in the quaint piazzas to night-time celebrations in the town’s buzzing bars.
- Currency & Payments: Now that Croatia has adopted the Euro, transactions are straightforward. Most places accept credit cards, but I always recommend having some cash for smaller vendors and markets, which are part of the authentic experience here.
Safety & Awareness
While Hvar is generally very safe, it’s wise to stay alert in crowded areas:
- Emergency Services: In case of an emergency, dial 112.
- Keep an eye on your belongings especially in busy tourist spots.
