Location & Transportation
Large cruise ships previously had to anchor offshore and use tenders to ferry passengers to the city’s wharf. As of November 2018, the opening of the new Halong’s International Passenger Port now allows ships to dock directly beside the brand new Hon Gai International Passenger Terminal.
If you need to continue your journey by air, the nearest airport is Cat Bi International Airport in Haiphong – about a 50-minute taxi ride away. Taxis and private transfers are available outside the terminal.
Sightseeing
There really isn’t much to see in the immediate port area beyond the bay itself – but that’s the highlight! Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Ha Long Bay dazzles visitors with its emerald waters, towering limestone karsts, mysterious caves, and hidden coves. Legend has it that a mighty dragon once descended upon these waters, giving the bay its name (“Ha Long” means “descending dragon”).
When you’re here, be sure to explore:
- The many scenic overlooks where you can admire the natural formations.
- Numerous small caves that dot the bay’s coastline.
- Local vendors offering unique souvenirs and traditional Vietnamese snacks along the waterfront.
Tours & Excursions
There are plenty of ways to make the most of your stay:
- Junk Boat Rides: Skip the crowded ship’s excursion and hire a private junk boat from a nearby pier. A typical ride takes about 45 minutes to reach the karsts – extend it to 4 to 6 hours for a deeper experience. Prices are very reasonable at around US$10 per person for a group.
- Ferry to Cat Ba Island: Catch a ferry from the terminal to Cat Ba Island for around 40 minutes. Once there, you can explore the island’s natural beauty and enjoy fresh seafood at local restaurants.
- Day Trip to Hanoi: While Hanoi is about a 3-4 hour drive away, it offers a glimpse of bustling Vietnamese urban life combined with rich history. Organized tours can make the long drive more comfortable and informative, taking you through charming countryside and vibrant villages.
Shopping
While Halong Bay itself is all about natural beauty, there are small local markets and souvenir shops around the Bai Chay and Tuan Chau areas where you can:
- Pick up traditional handicrafts.
- Sample local snacks.
- Browse casual clothing and accessories.
- Practice your bargaining skills, as it’s common here to negotiate prices.
Dining
Vietnamese cuisine is a treat for the senses, and Halong Bay is no exception. When dining near the port or in the surrounding areas, you’ll find:
- A variety of fresh seafood dishes, including grilled fish and shrimp.
- Local specialties such as pho (noodle soup) and bun cha (grilled pork with noodles).
- Cafés offering strong Vietnamese coffee and tasty local desserts.
For a memorable meal, consider trying a waterfront restaurant in the Bai Chay area for stunning views alongside delicious flavors.
Culture & Local Events
Vietnam is steeped in rich culture and history:
- The native language is Vietnamese, but English is increasingly spoken in tourist areas.
- The local currency is the dong (VND), though U.S. dollars are widely accepted. The typical exchange rate is around 16,000 dong to US$1. Bargaining is common in markets and smaller shops.
- Business hours tend to be from early morning until the early evening, with many local shops and markets closing by 9:00 PM.
- Depending on when you visit, you might catch vibrant local festivals. For example, during Tet (Vietnamese New Year), communities burst into celebration with traditional music, dance, and fireworks.
- Traditional events and community gatherings are frequent, providing a wonderful glimpse into local customs and daily life.
Safety & Awareness
- Always keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded tourist areas.
- In case of emergencies, dial 112 for assistance.
- It’s a good idea to dress modestly when visiting religious sites and local communities.
