Location & Transportation
Most cruise ships pull up to the Port Chilkoot dock, located at the foot of historic Fort Seward, just a few blocks south of Haines’ town center. Some smaller vessels use the Fast Ferry dock, which is only a block away. Both docks are within an uphill walking distance to many of the town’s main attractions.
When more than one ship is in port, passengers might be tendered to the dock in smaller boats. During busy cruise seasons, a convenient shuttle bus runs every 30 minutes. It starts at the Port Chilkoot Dock and loops by the Sheldon Museum, Visitor Center, Library, Dalton City, the Eagle Foundation, and the Fort Seward Historic District before returning to the dock.
Sightseeing
Haines is nestled on a narrow spit along the west side of the Lynn Canal, one of the deepest fjords in the Inside Passage. I love how the port uniquely blends small-town charm with grand natural beauty. As you wander, you’ll notice:
• The impressive site of historic Fort Seward – once the USA’s first permanent army post – where many original buildings have been repurposed into art galleries, cozy eateries, and local accommodations.
• Stunning views of the 6,500-ft Cathedral Peaks providing a dramatic backdrop to the town.
• Opportunities to spot bald eagles, especially during the fall when more than 3,500 eagles gather at the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve along the Chilkat River.
These sites give you a taste of both local history and nature at its finest.

Culture & Local Events
Haines embraces a friendly, small-town vibe with plenty of local flavor. Here’s what you need to know:
• Currency & Payment: The official currency is the United States dollar ($). Major credit cards, including Visa and MasterCard, are widely accepted. Remember that sales tax (typically around 4–6%) is added at the register, so prices may seem lower on display than what you actually pay. • Communication & Practical Tips: While staying connected isn’t a major issue, it’s best to ask locals or your tour guide for current tips on the best spots to catch local happenings. • Local Business Hours: As a small town, most shops and eateries tend to open around 10:00 AM and close by early evening. Check locally for any seasonal changes or holiday hours. • Local Events: In the summer, Haines comes alive with festivals, art shows, and community events celebrating its rich history and connection to the natural world. From local art exhibitions to seasonal music events, there’s often something exciting happening – so it’s a great idea to stop by the Visitor Center for the latest info.
