Location & Transportation
I love how relaxed Golfito feels when you step off your ship. This port is perfect for smaller cruise ships and lands you right in the heart of town. Once you’re here, you’ll notice that Golfito’s history as a former banana port adds to its laid-back charm. The port area is just a short walk from the downtown center, and if you need to get around, a taxi boat is a fun, local way to explore the bay’s many beaches. Of course, regular taxis are plentiful if you’d rather stick to land.

If you decide to stay overnight, Golfito has a few small hotels and guesthouses that offer a comfortable stay. These locally owned spots provide a cozy atmosphere and a chance to experience Costa Rican hospitality firsthand.
Nearest Airport
The port is just a few minutes’ drive from the local airport. Golfito Airport serves the area, making it convenient for quick transfers. A short taxi ride will get you from the port to the airport in no time.

Golfito is set along a calm bay that’s part of the larger Golfo Dulce – a favorite spot for local fishing enthusiasts. While exploring, you can enjoy:
- Strolling along scenic beaches and watching small fishing boats in action.
- Taking in the view of the surrounding hills and the lush rainforests.
- Visiting the protected Refugio Nacional de Fauna Silvestre Golfito where nature shows off its best colors.
- Heading a little further to Pavones Beach, famous among surfers for its great waves.
- Catching a water taxi to Playa Cacao — a beautiful spot near the old port where you can relax and soak in the natural beauty.
Tours & Excursions
There are some fantastic hiking and nature-watching opportunities around Golfito. I personally enjoyed wandering the trails of the wildlife refuge, where each path offers breathtaking views of the ocean meeting the dense forest. Here are a few tips if you’re planning an excursion:
- Wear lightweight, long-sleeved clothing and long pants.
- Use a good insect repellent with a high concentration of DEET – it’s a must in the tropical climate.
- Take plenty of water and a hat, especially if you’re spending the day outdoors exploring the trails.
Shopping
For a bit of retail therapy, check out the duty-free center located to the north of town. It’s a great place to pick up souvenirs and local crafts. Just remember to bring your passport, as it’s required for shopping in the duty-free area.
Dining
Golfito might be small, but it offers a delightful taste of Costa Rican cuisine. When you’re in town, I recommend trying:
- Fresh seafood dishes that capture the essence of coastal Costa Rica.
- The traditional “casado,” a hearty plate that blends rice, beans, salad, and your choice of meat.
- Local cafes serving freshly brewed Costa Rican coffee and tropical fruit treats.
The local eateries are casual and welcoming, perfect for a relaxed meal after a day of exploring.
Culture & Local Events
Golfito’s culture is rich with Costa Rican traditions and a relaxed, friendly vibe. Here’s what you can expect:
- • Currency & Communication: While the local currency is the Costa Rican Colón (CRC) – about 575 Colones for 1 US Dollar – many businesses in tourist areas accept US Dollars as well. Spanish is the native language, but you’ll find that English is widely spoken in the areas frequented by travelers.
- • Opening Hours & Holidays: Like much of Costa Rica, Golfito reflects a laid-back schedule. Shops often open from around 09:00 to 18:00 or 19:00, though hours can vary by location. As a predominantly Catholic country, many businesses close on major religious holidays. During Easter Holy Week, for instance, many local services take a break, and the Christmas to New Year period is celebrated as an extended holiday.
- • Local Events: Although Golfito is a small port town, it comes alive with local festivals that celebrate its maritime heritage and tropical lifestyle. Keep an eye out for seasonal events and local music or food fairs that might be taking place during your visit.
Safety & Awareness
I always remind visitors that while Golfito is generally safe, it’s smart to stay aware of your surroundings—especially in busy areas. In case of emergencies, don’t hesitate to dial 911.
