Location & Transportation
All large cruise ships in Frederiksted berth at the island's only major pier—named after a former Public Works Commissioner, Ann E. Abramson. This 1,526-foot-long pier easily accommodates two ships at the same time and features a kiosk with tourism information plus nearby public restrooms. I love that the pier is right in the center of town, and you can even take a leisurely 10-15 minute walk to one of the pretty local beaches.
A brand-new electric trolley now runs along the long pier, giving visitors an easy way to move about. When you’re ready to explore further, taxis and tour buses can whisk you off to Christiansted, where you’ll find more shopping, sightseeing, and round-the-island excursions. For example, a taxi ride to Christiansted usually costs about $25 for two people, and shuttle buses are available for roughly $16.
Nearby Lodging
There are several charming hotels and guesthouses in Frederiksted and nearby Christiansted. Many offer a comfortable stay with a touch of local character—ideal for relaxing after a day of exploring.
Nearest Airport
The Henry E. Rohlsen International Airport (STX) on St. Croix is just a short drive away (around 20–30 minutes). This small airport serves the entire island, making transfers to and from the cruise port pretty straightforward.
Sightseeing
St. Croix boasts a rich blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Walking through Frederiksted, you’ll notice echoes of the island’s past:
- Historic sites like the great plantation houses, including Estate Whim Plantation, set against rolling green hills.
- Architecture reflecting the island’s seven flags—Spanish, Dutch, British, French, Knights of Malta, Danish, and American.
- The legacy of sugar and rum, visible in the many old sugar mills and charming eighteenth- and nineteenth-century homes.
I also love visiting the Cruzan Rum Distillery. Operating for over 300 years, the distillery offers guided tours that bring you up close to the art and history of rum-making on the island.
Tours & Excursions
There’s plenty to do once you leave the dock:
- On the pier itself, you can buy tickets for shuttle buses that take you across the island to the quaint capital, Christiansted. This town impresses with its beautifully restored Danish fortress and European flair mixed with Caribbean charm.
- Many taxi drivers at the pier also offer impromptu tours—around $25 per person for roughly four hours of exploration.
- Don’t miss a trip to Buck Island National Reef Monument. This 880-acre nature preserve, with its famous underwater snorkeling trail, is one of the most popular excursions in the US Virgin Islands.
These excursions offer a memorable taste of local culture and natural beauty that you can’t miss.
Shopping
For duty-free shopping with a local twist, head over to Christiansted’s historic district. The charming streets are lined with boutiques and stores selling souvenirs, local crafts, and designer goods. Just remember that most shops close on Sundays, so plan your visit accordingly.
Dining
Frederiksted offers a range of dining options—from casual beachside eateries to more upscale restaurants. I always recommend trying local seafood dishes, conch fritters, and other Caribbean specialties. Enjoy a refreshing cocktail or a locally brewed rum as you take in the relaxed island vibe.
Culture & Local Events
- US dollars (USD) are the official currency here. Credit cards are widely accepted, but I always suggest carrying a bit of cash for small purchases.
- While English is the official language, you’ll also hear Spanish on the island—a nod to the rich cultural blend.
- Shopping hours are typically Monday through Saturday from 9:00 to 17:00, and when cruise ships are in port, some larger establishments even open on Sundays.
- St. Croix’s vibrant culture is reflected in its blend of Caribbean, European, and American influences. As you wander through the historic streets, you’ll notice local music, art, and festivals that celebrate the island’s heritage.
Local Events
Local festivals and events are common, celebrating everything from Caribbean music and art to historical commemorations. Check local guides or ask at your hotel to find out if there’s a festival or special event during your visit.
Safety & Awareness
- Always keep an eye on your personal belongings, especially in busy tourist areas.
- In case of an emergency, dial 911.
- Though the island is generally friendly and welcoming, it’s wise to stay aware and use common-sense precautions when exploring new areas.
