Eidfjord, Norway

Eidfjord, NorwayNorthern Europe

Eidfjord is located in the innermost part of the famous Hardangerfjord. Known for its stunning sail-in views, the cruise port opens directly into a charming small town with a rich connection to nature and history.

Note: It‘s a good idea to compare shore excursion costs between what your cruise line offers and options like Viator and GetYourGuide. They often provide lower prices and include customer reviews and ratings to help you choose the best option. They may also offer more more flexible cancellation or rescheduling policies than those available through your cruise line. However, while booking independently might give you more variety and potentially better rates, be mindful of your schedule - cruise line excursions are typically coordinated to match your ship‘s schedule with guaranteed pick-up and drop-off times.

Location & Transportation

Eidfjord is tucked away in the innermost part of the famous Hardangerfjord. I love arriving here because the sail-in is absolutely breathtaking, and you'll quickly find yourself stepping off your ship right into the heart of a very friendly, small town of about 1,000 residents. Most things are within walking distance, and the center is easy to explore at your own pace.

If you need to catch a ride, local taxis are available, and the bus connections, though less frequent than in bigger cities, do a good job of connecting Eidfjord with nearby attractions. Once you’re here, you won’t feel rushed—take your time and enjoy the pristine scenery.

Sightseeing

I always recommend starting your visit with a leisurely walk. Stop by the tourist office near the dock to pick up a free walking guide. One lovely route takes you along the river’s edge (look for the path starting just across the bridge from where your ship is berthed) through woodlands and eventually up to a beautiful lake. It’s a gentle walk that lets you absorb the natural beauty of the area.

Don’t miss these nearby highlights:

  • Hæreid Viking Graves: Just a 20-minute walk from the town center, these ancient burial sites give you a glimpse into Norway’s fascinating early history.
  • The Old Church: Dating back to 1309, this historic church is a peaceful spot with a rich story.
  • Vøringsfossen Waterfall: About 19.5 km away, this majestic 600-foot waterfall is one of Norway’s most famous natural attractions.
  • The Hardangervidda Plateau: For those who enjoy dramatic landscapes, this well-known plateau offers rugged beauty and a chance to learn about the region’s unique flora and fauna. If trekking isn’t your thing, the Hardangervidda Natursenter is a great alternative to explore the area’s natural wonders.

Tours & Excursions

For a guided adventure, hop on the Troll Train. This one-hour tour starts right outside the tourist information office. You’ll first head to the Hæreid terrace to view Western Norway’s largest collection of ancient graves, then enjoy a short photo stop at an incredible viewpoint overlooking the fjord and mountains. Next, you’ll visit the Lægreid terrace for a closer look at the historic Eidfjord Old Church before returning to town. Tickets are available at the tourist information center.

If you have extra time, consider renting a bike or arranging a private tour to see more of the fjord’s secret spots and enjoy the quiet, natural surroundings at your leisure.

Shopping

Eidfjord is a small town, so shopping here is less about big malls and more about discovering unique, locally made souvenirs. I enjoy browsing the small shops where you can pick up handcrafted items, local wool products, and traditional Norwegian handicrafts. Most places accept credit cards, but it’s wise to carry a bit of cash in NOK for smaller purchases. It’s a great chance to bring home a little piece of Norwegian culture.

Dining

Dining in Eidfjord is a warm and welcoming experience. The town has a few charming cafés and local restaurants where you can sample traditional Norwegian dishes. I highly recommend trying fresh local fish, hearty mountain stews, and maybe even some Norwegian waffles topped with jam or sour cream. The atmosphere is cozy, and you’ll often find that dining here feels like joining a local family meal.

Nearby Lodging

While many cruise passengers visit Eidfjord for a day excursion, if you find yourself wanting to stay overnight, there are a few excellent local options. Small guesthouses and charming bed & breakfasts dot the town, providing a genuine taste of Norwegian hospitality. Popular choices include local fjord hotels that offer stunning views and a comfortable, homey atmosphere—perfect for a quiet night after a day of exploration.

Culture & Local Events

Eidfjord has a rich cultural vibe despite its small size. Here are a few tips to help you blend in like a local:

  • The local currency is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). While credit cards are accepted in most places, keeping a little cash on hand can be useful.
  • The pace of life here is relaxed. Most shops and attractions operate during daylight hours, and you’re likely to experience a slower, more friendly tempo than in larger cities.
  • Although Eidfjord is not known for huge festivals, there are seasonal events and local gatherings, especially in the summer. Check with the tourist office for any special market days or community events during your visit.
  • Safety is never a major concern here, but like anywhere, keep your belongings secure and plan ahead if you’re venturing into more rugged terrain. Weather in the fjord area can change quickly, so dress in layers and be prepared for sudden shifts.
