Location & Transportation
When you arrive at Port Denarau, you’ll be tendered right into the heart of Fiji’s top resort area. The cruise terminal is conveniently located among luxurious hotels and resorts, so it feels like you’re stepping straight into a mini-vacation the minute you disembark. Local ferries and taxis are readily available if you wish to explore beyond the resort area. If you have extra time, a quick taxi ride (about FJD 10) will take you to Nadi, where you’ll find the main international airport and a taste of local urban life.
Nearby Lodging
I’ve enjoyed a relaxing stay at the Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, which has a beautiful 6,538-metre resort golf course and comfortable accommodations. There are plenty of other hotels and resorts along Denarau Island if you prefer a different style or price range.
Nearest Airport
Nadi International Airport is just a short drive away. It’s very convenient if you need to catch an early flight or if you simply want to experience a bit of Fijian city life before or after your cruise.
Sightseeing
If you’re up for a little adventure, I highly recommend leaving the resort area to see the real Fiji. Take a trip into the countryside to visit traditional villages and experience the authentic Fijian way of life. Remember that “Fiji time” really lives up to its name—a friendly local might tell you a short walk takes only a few minutes when it really might take a bit longer, so it’s always good to ask for details.
Some highlights include:
- Local villages with traditional Fijian homes and friendly welcomes
- Scenic coastal views that truly capture the relaxed island vibe
- Cultural centers showcasing Fijian crafts and ceremonies
Tours & Excursions
Port Denarau is the perfect jumping-off point for day cruises to nearby island resorts. There are plenty of opportunities for island hopping, snorkeling adventures, and beach picnics where you can truly soak in the Fijian sun.
Don’t miss:
- A ride on the Bula Bus, which will take you on a scenic loop around Denarau Island for about 9 FJD for an all-day pass.
- Taxi trips to Nadi to explore local markets and get a glimpse of everyday Fijian urban life.
Shopping
The area around the port offers a mix of upscale boutiques and local shops. You can find everything from souvenir stands and local crafts to international brands. There’s also a popular Hard Rock Cafe and a well-stocked supermarket if you fancy picking up some local treats or essentials during your stop.
Dining
Dining in Denarau is a delightful experience. Whether you’re in the mood for high-end dining at a resort restaurant or casual bites at local cafes, you’ll find plenty of options:
- Enjoy fresh seafood dishes showcasing Fiji’s ocean bounty.
- Try traditional Fijian flavors in local eateries.
- International chains like Hard Rock Cafe provide a familiar menu for a quick bite.
Culture & Local Events
Fiji’s vibrant culture is one of its biggest attractions. When visiting Denarau, you can expect:
- The official currency is the Fijian Dollar (FJD), and while major resorts accept credit cards, carrying a little cash is handy for local markets and small shops.
- English is widely spoken, making it easy to chat with locals and learn a few Fijian phrases.
- Local shops typically open early (from around 6:00–8:00 am) and run until early evening on weekdays, while restaurants and essential services often stay open on Sundays and public holidays.
- Experience traditional Fijian ceremonies and music, or check if there’s a local market or cultural show happening during your visit. Even a simple village Meke dance performance can be a memorable part of your day.
Safety & Awareness
Fiji is known for its warm hospitality, but it’s always good to keep a few safety tips in mind:
- Stay aware of your belongings, especially in crowded areas.
- When exploring local beaches or taking a dip in the ocean, be mindful of currents and heed any local advice regarding water safety.
- In case of an emergency, dial 911.
