Location & Transportation
Tomil Harbor is located in Colonia, the state capital of Yap. The port, which can accommodate vessels up to 183 meters, features a welcome center for cruise guests at the Yap Living History Museum – just a short walk from where your ship docks.
Note that the entrance to the port through the reef is narrow (only 90 meters wide), so on occasion, due to weather or tidal conditions, visits may be cancelled. For a handy reference, you can check the map of Yap and view Colonia’s layout before you set off.
Sightseeing
Yap is an enchanting destination where ancient traditions come to life. I’ve enjoyed wandering through its charming corners and here are some highlights worth checking out:
- Visit the Yap Living History Museum to get an insight into the local heritage.
- Explore cultural village tours that include stops at a handmade seaside men’s house and demonstrations of handicraft making.
- Discover the famous stone money – large, ancient limestone discs that still hold ceremonial importance.
- Keep your eyes peeled for manta rays; Yap is world-renowned for diving and snorkeling opportunities with these gentle giants.
- Hike on the “Tamilyog Trail,” an ancient stone path that offers a scenic view of the island.
- Enjoy a traditional sailing experience on a canoe organized by the Yap Traditional Navigation Society.
- Check out World War II wrecks for a historical perspective of the island.
- When visiting local beaches (note that all beaches on Yap Proper and the outer islands are privately owned), remember that modest dress is appreciated – women are advised to cover their thighs and long shorts or sarongs work best.
Tours & Excursions
There are several ways to explore Yap beyond the port:
- Local taxi services charge around US$1 within Colonia and about US$12 if you’re headed to the furthest parts of the island.
- Arrange village tours with a local guide. Recommended tours include the Kaday Cultural Tour, Wuluuq Cultural Tour, and experiences organized by the Yap Traditional Navigation Society.
- The Manta Ray Bay Hotel also organizes tours, particularly for those keen on diving and snorkeling adventures.
Shopping
For a taste of local life, head to the main markets in Colonia:
- The Yap Cooperative Association (Y.C.A) and Blue Lagoon (EMI) are the largest grocery stores, offering a variety of local products.
- Smaller produce markets around Blue Lagoon and Chamorro Bay provide fresh local fruits and handmade goods, perfect for a unique souvenir.
Dining
Although Yap is a small island, its dining experiences are full of local flavor. I recommend trying:
- Traditional Yapese dishes that often feature fresh seafood.
- Local cafes and small eateries where warm hospitality complements simple, tasty meals.
- Street vendors offering quick bites that provide an authentic taste of island life.
Culture & Local Events
Yap’s cultural scene is as rich as its history. Here are some key points and events that give you a deeper insight into local life:
- The official currency is the US dollar, but don’t be surprised to see the island’s ancient stone money used in ceremonial exchanges.
- English is widely spoken, and the friendly locals are happy to share stories and traditions.
Local festivals and holidays include:
- Yap Day: Celebrated in the first week of March.
- Homecoming Festival: Held during the third week of June.
