Location & Transportation
When you arrive at the new port and cruise terminal at Kepez, you’ll quickly notice that most cruise lines offer shuttles into the center of Canakkale, which is just about 3 km away. I found that the local transport is simple and efficient—regular taxis and the occasional dolmuş (a shared minibus that leaves when full) offer a fun way to see the area.
Nearby Lodging
There are plenty of choices if you decide to stay overnight. Canakkale offers a mix of boutique hotels, comfortable guesthouses, and seaside resorts—many just a short walk from the waterfront where you can taste the city’s relaxed vibe.
Nearest Airport
If you’re flying in, Çanakkale Airport (CKZ) is approximately 25–30 km from the cruise port. Although flights are limited, you can catch connecting services via Istanbul. For convenience, taxis or pre-arranged transfers are available.
Sightseeing
Canakkale is steeped in history and local charm. On the Asian shore that overlooks the Dardanelles, you can wander through the quiet streets of Canakkale and feel the weight of centuries past. Key highlights include:
- The Canakkale Archaeological Museum – home to fascinating exhibits once curated by Frank Calvert, who aided Heinrich Schliemann in his discoveries.
- The vast memorials on the Gallipoli Peninsula – a poignant tribute to the heroes of World War I.
- A short trip (about 18 km) will take you to the legendary ruins of Troy, where myth and history intertwine.
Tours & Excursions
There’s so much to explore on day trips from Canakkale. I highly recommend:
- A guided tour to the ancient ruins of Troy, where you can walk among the layers of nine ancient cities and imagine the epic tales of old.
- Excursions to nearby sites such as Behramkale in the village of Assos. Here, you can visit the famous Temple of Athena and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Gulf of Edremit.
- A visit to the Dardanos tumulus near the Kalabakli stream in Maltepe district, with remains that date back to the Archaic and Roman periods.
- A day trip to one of the nearby islands, like Gökceada or Bozcaada. Both islands offer charming landscapes and even camping facilities if you’re up for a little adventure.
Local taxis are reliable and fares are regulated, but do remember to negotiate the price in advance for longer journeys.
Shopping
Shopping in Canakkale is a delightful experience. While wandering the local markets and souvenir stalls along the seafront promenade, don’t be shy about a bit of friendly haggling. You’ll find:
- Souvenir shops with unique Turkish crafts
- Weekly markets offering local produce, handmade textiles, and artisanal goods
- Small mini-markets for everyday groceries
Dining
There’s no shortage of culinary delights in Canakkale. I love sitting by the seafront at one of the fish restaurants or bars, watching the boats glide by while enjoying fresh local seafood. Turkish cuisine is world-renowned—try the traditional kebabs, a variety of meze (appetizers), and round off your meal with a glass of Raki, Turkey’s famous anise-flavored spirit.
Culture & Local Events
Canakkale is rich in culture and history, and this influences everything from daily life to festive celebrations. Here are a few tips and local insights:
- Currency: The local currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY). While many shops and restaurants in the tourist areas may accept foreign currency, it’s best to have some lira on hand if you plan to explore further afield.
- Hours & Holidays: In tourist and coastal areas, you’ll find flexible opening hours—especially in the summer, when many shops stay open late into the evening.
- Local Events: Canakkale holds a special place in Turkish history with events commemorating the Gallipoli Campaign and the battles of Çanakkale. These events, often held around March 18, provide a deep insight into the region’s past and are accompanied by ceremonies and local displays of tradition.
- Safety & Awareness: Always keep an eye on your belongings, particularly in busy areas. In case of emergencies, dial 112 for ambulance services or 155 for the police.
