Location & Transportation
Calica is a small but important cruise port where two ships can dock at the same time. It’s one of only two places on the Yucatan Peninsula that allows direct ship docking without a long tender ride. If more than two ships arrive, then tendering will be necessary.
The port is located about three miles south of Playa del Carmen. In my visits, I found that a short taxi ride costs around $10, making it very easy to explore the nearby attractions. While the port itself has very limited services, its location makes it perfect for a day of adventure and discovery.
Nearby Lodging
There aren’t many hotels right at Calica, so most visitors choose to stay in Playa del Carmen or nearby beach resorts, where there’s a wider range of accommodations to suit every style and budget.
Nearest Airport
Cancun International Airport is roughly a 45-minute drive away, a convenient option if you’re flying in or out. From the airport, taxis or transfers to Calica are readily available.
Sightseeing
I’ve been lucky enough to explore the striking natural and cultural sites around Calica. One standout is Xcaret Park, an ecological theme park just under a mile from the ship. At Xcaret, you can float down an underground river that winds through mysterious caves and lush landscapes. Be sure to pack your bathing suit, mask, and snorkel for an immersive experience.
Another gem is Aktun-Chen Park (known to some as Indiana Joe’s Tour). This natural park is about 25 minutes from Playa del Carmen and offers a fascinating cave tour with stalactites, stalagmites, and even zip lines. It’s a thrilling mix of nature and adventure that truly highlights the wonders of the Riviera Maya.
Don’t forget to wander the charming streets of Playa del Carmen. Its markets, art displays, and beautiful beaches truly capture the local spirit.

Shopping
For a mix of local charm and modern flair, a taxi ride to Playa del Carmen is highly recommended for shopping. You’ll find bustling markets filled with traditional crafts, souvenirs, and beachwear, alongside modern shopping centers. Strolling through these vibrant streets is a wonderful way to pick up unique gifts and indulge in some local flavor.
Dining
The area around Calica offers a taste of authentic Mexican cuisine. In nearby Playa del Carmen, you can sample a wide array of dishes—from casual beachside tacos and freshly caught seafood to upscale restaurants serving regional specialties with a twist. I often recommend trying local treats that bring together the rich flavors of the Riviera Maya.
Culture & Local Events
Calica is deeply rooted in Mayan heritage and local traditions. Here are some local cultural insights that I’ve found useful:
- In tourist locales, prices are frequently shown in both Mexican pesos (MXN) and US dollars, with roughly 17 pesos to 1 US dollar. This can come in handy when budgeting for your excursions.
- Credit cards aren’t as widely accepted here as in bigger cities, so carrying some cash is wise.
- Ask locals about any seasonal festivals or events. The surrounding region often hosts vibrant celebrations that showcase traditional music, dance, and crafts. These events provide a wonderful glimpse into the rich local culture.
- Always keep an eye on your belongings, especially in busy areas, to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit.
