Location & Transportation
Your ship will dock in Getxo—an attractive seaside town right by a lovely leisure marina. I love how you can step off the ship and take an 800-meter walk to a beach and a mansion-lined promenade. Once you’re in Getxo, you’ll notice the charm of a town known for its stunning coastal cliffs and refined residential areas.
Here’s how you can get around:
- A tourist desk is available at the cruise terminal, where you can get local advice.
- Many cruise lines offer a shuttle service to central Bilbao for about 15€; this service drops you at Plaza Moyua, which is just a short walk from the Guggenheim.
- Alternatively, you can take the Metro Bilbao. The nearest station, Neguri, is about a 20-minute pleasant walk along the promenade. Buy a 2-zone ticket for around 2€ each way and ride to Moyua.
- If you’re looking for convenience, a taxi from Getxo to Bilbao costs around 30€.
Nearby Lodging
Bilbao and its surrounding areas offer a variety of hotels—from trendy boutique options in the old town to modern accommodations near the business district. Staying in central Bilbao means you’re always within walking distance of key attractions.
Nearest Airport
Bilbao Airport is conveniently located about 12 km from Bilbao’s center. Taxis and buses run frequently between the airport and the city. If you have extra luggage or prefer a direct ride, a taxi is the simplest option.
Sightseeing
Bilbao is a city of artistic wonders and historic treasures. While in Getxo, don’t miss:
- A stroll along its charming promenade, where elegant mansions and the world-famous Bridge of Biscay capture the spirit of the past. Dating back to 1893, this transporter bridge is a must-see architectural gem.
Head into Bilbao and enjoy:
- The modern marvel that is the Guggenheim Museum, a landmark of avant-garde art (note: the museum is closed on Mondays and offers discounts for visitors 59+ with proof of age).
- Wandering the enchanting old town (Casco Viejo), with its narrow lanes, lively bars, and traditional tapas spots.
- Visits to historical sites like the Cathedral of Santiago, the Church of San Anton, and the arcaded Plaza Nueva.
- Discovering one of Spain’s finest art collections at the Museo de Bellas Artes.
For a bit of extra exploration, consider day trips to nearby treasures:
- San Sebastián – a beautiful resort city about a 1-hour 20-minute drive to the east.
- Guernica – a town rich in history, famously commemorated by Picasso’s painting "Guernica".
Tours & Excursions
There are plenty of guided experiences to help you see Bilbao from another angle:
- Hop on a double-decker bus tour that covers the city's highlights (note that the service does not run on Tuesdays).
- Book a guided walking tour through the Old Town to learn about Bilbao’s transformation from an industrial hub to a center of design and art.
- Enjoy a leisurely ride on the metro and then explore on foot for a local feel of daily life.
Shopping
Moyua is the beating heart of Bilbao’s shopping scene, where you’ll find a mix of trendy boutiques, department stores, and charming sidewalk cafés. In the old town, there’s an inviting indoor market that offers a taste of local life with fresh produce and artisanal products—the perfect spot to pick up a unique memento.
Dining
Bilbao’s food scene is a delight for any traveler. I’ve had some wonderful meals here, from traditional Basque pintxos to fresh seafood dishes. Whether you’re dining in the old town’s cozy taverns or along the scenic promenade in Getxo, you’ll find plenty of spots offering both classic and innovative cuisine. Don’t forget to try a local specialty along with a glass of Txakoli, the region’s famous slightly sparkling white wine.
Culture & Local Events
Bilbao is rich in local culture and vibrant events:
- • Money: The euro is used throughout Bilbao. It’s handy to know that coins and banknotes come in various denominations, so have a mix of cash for smaller purchases.
- • Language: While Spanish is the official language, Basque is also widely spoken. Learning a few basic Basque greetings, such as "Agur" (hello/goodbye), can be a fun way to connect with locals.
- • Opening Hours: Most shops and cafés operate Monday through Saturday—typically from 9:30 to 13:30 and 16:30 to 20:00. Larger stores and malls might stay open later. Remember that many museums are closed on Mondays.
- • Safety & Awareness: Bilbao is generally safe, but always keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded tourist areas. In case of emergencies, dial 112.
- • Local Events: The city hosts many cultural festivals, art exhibitions, and street performances throughout the year. Check local listings or the Bilbao Tourist Information website to see what’s on during your visit.
