Location & Transportation
I love the modern feel of Cape Liberty. Opened in May 2004 on The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor (the former Bayonne Navy Base/MOTBY facility), this cruise port offers a smooth gateway to New York City. It’s only 15 minutes from Newark Liberty International Airport and just seven miles from Manhattan. I found it easy to access by car via the New Jersey Turnpike (Exit 14A) or by taking the NJ Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to a nearby stop. Do note, though, that local regulations require a taxi ride for the short distance from the rail stop to the port—fortunately, a taxi here will cost you less than $10.
A little bonus for visitors: Royal Caribbean International invested $70 million in building this state-of-the-art terminal, ensuring a modern and efficient experience. And of course, one of my favorite perks is the breathtaking view—Cape Liberty offers unparalleled scenes of the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbor, and the magnificent Manhattan skyline. Sightseeing
While Bayonne itself is more of a transit hub, the port’s waterfront gifts you with stunning views of New York Harbor. I was mesmerized by the sight of the Statue of Liberty and the ever-impressive Manhattan skyline. If you have extra time, I highly recommend venturing into New York City to explore landmarks like Central Park, Times Square, and world-famous museums. It’s a quick and worthwhile excursion!
Tours & Excursions
One of my favorite things to do here is to join a guided tour into Manhattan. There are options ranging from harbor cruises to bus tours and walking excursions that reveal NYC’s rich history and dynamic energy. Whether it's a hop-on, hop-off bus adventure or a scenic boat ride, these tours offer a fantastic way to experience both the modern vibrancy and historical charm of New York.
Shopping
Bayonne may be small, but if you're up for a little adventure, New York City is just a short ride away and offers endless shopping opportunities. I love wandering through SoHo’s boutique stores or exploring the bustling Fifth Avenue for luxury brands. Whether you’re hunting for unique souvenirs or the latest fashions, the nearby shopping districts won’t disappoint.
Dining
Dining options in and around Cape Liberty are as diverse as they are delicious. From grabbing a quick bite in Bayonne to savoring a gourmet meal in Manhattan, you can enjoy everything from classic American diners to trendy international cuisines. Don’t miss trying an authentic New York slice of pizza or a hearty brunch at a local bistro—the variety and quality of food here truly reflect the region’s dynamic cultural mix.
Culture & Local Events
Here’s what I’ve learned about the local culture around Cape Liberty:
- The official currency is the US Dollar (USD). Credit cards are widely accepted, but keep in mind that sales tax (usually around 4-6%) isn’t included in the sticker price.
- English is the main language spoken, and you’ll find that the service here is friendly and welcoming.
- Tipping is expected in the U.S.: around 15-20% in full-service restaurants, about 10% for taxi rides, and small tips for hotel staff, tour guides, and other services.
- Most shops and restaurants in the local and New York City area generally operate from around 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with many venues—even some late-night spots—open well into the evening. In larger metropolitan areas, you might even see businesses open 24/7.
- While Cape Liberty itself is focused on efficiently moving cruise passengers, the wider region bursts with cultural events, seasonal festivals, and live performances. Check local listings or event calendars when you’re here for any special happenings during your visit.
