Location & Transportation
The ship is scheduled to anchor in Taaoa Bay. Tenders will take guests ashore, and while the local shops are approximately two miles (or around three kilometers) away, be prepared for hilly terrain if you plan to walk. Taxis are generally not available here, so many visitors join local tours or rent a 4-wheel drive to get around.
For those planning to fly in or out of the region, the small Hiva Oa Airport is located just a short drive from Atuona—usually around 10 minutes—making it convenient for arrivals and departures.
Sightseeing
Atuona is set against a backdrop of dramatic landscapes. Hiva Oa is the largest of the southern islands and is famously shaped like a seahorse. A rugged mountain range, with main peaks such as Mt Temetiu and Mt Feani, forms a protective wall around the village. The town itself is a charming port at the head of Taaoa Bay, also known as Traitors Bay.
Here are some must-see local highlights:
- Paul Gauguin & Jacques Brel Sites: Visit the Calvary cemetery to see the tombs of these famous figures. The Gauguin Museum, located in the village, displays items related to the painter’s stay along with reproductions of his work.
- The Rebuilt House of Pleasure: Once the home of Gauguin, it has been reconstructed to display carved wood panels and a famous lintel inscription.
- Jacques Brel Memorial: On the outskirts of Atuona, near the airport and overlooking Tahauku Bay and Hanakee Islet, you’ll find a memorial dedicated to the singer. Don’t miss the small Beechcraft Bonanza airplane, affectionately known as "Jojo."
