Location & Transportation
The Cruise Terminal of Alexandria is modern and efficient, though it is a bit removed from downtown. The terminal is roughly 1.5 to 2 kilometers from the city center – about a 5-10 minute drive or a pleasant 20-25 minute walk. Taxis and shuttle services are usually available, so you have options whether you’d like a quick ride or a scenic stroll.
Keep your passport handy as you’ll need it to exit the port area, and note that Egypt’s visa requirements are typically handled in advance onboard. If you decide to join an excursion, many cruise companies offer guided tours, or you can arrange private tours to explore Alexandria and beyond. Fun fact: while most passengers head out early to explore longer trips – sometimes even to Cairo and the pyramids – a quieter port allows you to enjoy some time on board.
Sightseeing
Alexandria is steeped in history and offers a wonderful journey back in time. Founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC, this city was once a melting pot of cultures and learning. Some highlights that I love exploring include:
- The Graeco-Roman Museum, which showcases over 40,000 relics from Alexandria's storied past.
- The Roman Amphitheater, offering a glimpse into ancient entertainment.
- Montazah Palace with its lush gardens and stunning architecture.
- Fort Qait Bey, built on the site of the ancient Pharos Lighthouse – one of the wonders of the ancient world.
- The atmospheric catacombs and the impressive Pompey's Pillar.
- A leisurely walk along the seafront boulevards that whisper tales of bygone eras.

Tours & Excursions
One of my favorite things to do in Alexandria is to take a taxi ride along the Corniche, a beautiful waterfront boulevard that captures the spirit of the Mediterranean. Here, you can enjoy a relaxing stroll and stop by one of the many local restaurants serving freshly caught fish.
You won't want to miss the chance to visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, a modern tribute to the ancient Library of Alexandria. This cultural center houses millions of books, several museums, a planetarium, and art galleries – it’s a true architectural marvel.
For those with a bit more time, excursions often include trips to Cairo. A tour to Cairo and the pyramids may involve a police-escorted bus convoy for added security. Taxi rides within Alexandria can be quite affordable – short trips around town might cost as little as E£5, while journeys to areas like Montazah or Maamoura may be around E£25.
Shopping
Alexandria offers fantastic opportunities for souvenir shopping. Look for traditional Egyptian items such as:
- Cartouches with hieroglyphic inscriptions
- Papyrus art and scrolls
- Unique trinkets at local bazaars
Most souvenir shops also happily accept US dollars and Euros alongside the Egyptian Pound, making it easier to pick up a cherished reminder of your visit.
Dining
The dining scene in Alexandria is vibrant and infused with both Mediterranean and Egyptian flavors. Whether you’re savoring freshly caught seafood along the Corniche or enjoying classic Egyptian dishes like grilled kebabs and koshari, there’s always something to delight your palate. Many local restaurants and cafés feature outdoor seating so you can enjoy your meal with views of the sea and historic architecture.
Culture & Local Events
Alexandria’s rich cultural heritage makes every visit feel like a step back in time. Here are some insights into local life:
- Local language: Arabic is the primary language. In popular tourist spots, you’ll often find English spoken, but learning a few Arabic phrases can be a fun way to connect with locals.
- Currency insights: While the Egyptian Pound (EGP) is the official currency, many souvenir shops also accept US dollars and Euros.
- Local schedules: Keep in mind that opening hours and holiday schedules can vary. It’s always a good idea to check ahead for specific sites or events.
- Cultural events: The city occasionally hosts events and festivals that celebrate its deep historical roots, art, and music. If you’re lucky, your visit might coincide with a local festival or cultural exhibit.
Safety & Awareness
Alexandria is a captivating city, but like any popular tourist destination, it’s important to stay aware:
- Always keep your passport secure and on your person since you’ll need it to exit the port area.
- When taking taxis, be sure to agree on a fare beforehand since meters are not commonly used.
- Look after your personal belongings, especially in busy areas, to avoid any mishaps.
